Accommodation

One of the most comprehensive ways of securing your room in Belgrade would be from www.booking.com; there are many options available on the site menu. The search engine allows you to tailor the parameters to suit your individual needs. Just as an example, selecting Belgrade, June 16 - June 21, 1 adult, 0 children, 1 room, resulted in many available options. If you want a room close to the city centre, please choose the “less than 1 km” filter. From over 200 establishments (July 2023), we may recommend these:

The Moskva Hotel – 5 nights, 601 euros in total

The Amsterdam Hotel – 5 nights, 475 euros in total

The Bohemian Garni Hotel – 5 nights, 298 euros in total

The Nevski Garni Hotel – 5 nights, 358 euros in total

The Opera Garni Hotel – 5 nights, 670 euros in total

The Atera Business Suites – 5 nights, 315 euros in total

The Belgrade Inn Garni Hotel – 5 nights, 595 euros in total

The Black Pearl Luxury Suites – 5 nights, 350 euros in total

With the exception of the Moskva Hotel, all the others are of a more recent date, and do not have such a long-standing tradition, although their service is also excellent. Two more hotels from the older group are:

The Palace Hotel – 1 night, 54 euros (info from late June)

The Majestic Hotel – 1 night single room, 90 euros; 1 night double room, 120 euros (info from early July)

Please beware that certain hotels have not yet defined their prices for the next year, and therefore it would be good to have their email confirmations at hand. But if you do book the room and complete the credit/debit card transaction, there will be no price change later on. In addition, the sojourn tax for a person per day is up to 1.4 euros.

Another important step is to check the respective hotel’s availability making the decision to book the room. Two things to avoid on this website are: hostels and the “New to Booking” tag.

Apart from the hotels, the same Booking search offers an even greater number of apartments to rent, ranging from 25 to 50 square metres. You may trust the proprietors with the highest marks on the site, and if the number of reviews is high, so much the better. Since many foreigners visit the city, decent cleanliness and utility services are to be expected in the very centre of the nation’s capital.

If you prefer www.airbnb.com, the same search criteria (Belgrade, June 16 – June 21, one adult guest) also yield very favourable results, on average $50 per night, with exceptionally high review scores. The flats for rental are concentrated in the vicinity of the conference venue, about 500m from the Faculty of Philology. Even without included breakfast, there are a number of restaurants, cafés, bakeries and similar establishments to offer various types of nourishment. The conference will also feature snacks during breaks, so these needs will be sufficiently met.

The following list may be used as an additional guide, because Booking and Airbnb offer a wider array of hotels and suites. It is essential to verify the price, which can be easily done through the hotels’ info mail addresses, although it may take a day to get the answer to your inquiry.

Medical facilities (doctors, clinics, laboratories, hospitals)

The health care system in Serbia is dominated by the public service providers. However, private offices, clinics, laboratories and even hospitals are available ever more often, especially in Belgrade.

Local health care centres (“dom zdravlja”) - accept patients without referral and send them to the hospital when their medical problem needs a specialist opinion. The health centres provide public health surveillance, tuberculosis programmes, physical and occupational therapy, maternity care, child health care and dental care. They also provide emergency medical aid as well as laboratory, radiology, etc.

Hospitals (“bolnica”) - 77 hospitals in Serbia provide infirmary and hospital treatments.

Clinical centres, health clinics, institutes, clinical hospitals - there are four clinical centres in Serbia (in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Kragujevac)

Public hospitals have 24-hour accident and emergency departments, where medical treatment for both residents and non-residents is free-of-charge. In case of emergency, dial 194.

Private medical facilities

There are various private medical facilities in Belgrade. Among the recommended ones is Bel Medic General Hospital and Health Centre which consists of the hospital and polyclinic. It is somewhat more expensive but with English speaking staff available at all times.

Security

Belgrade is regarded as generally safe. However, thefts of vehicles, house burglaries and petty street crime are not uncommon, and the staff, especially foreigners, need to exercise usual, common-sense caution. Please mind your back pockets and keep your valuables, like passports, money, IDs and similar in a safe place – whether it is your front pocket, your purse, or a hotel safe. In case of any passport/ID card theft, it is essential to report it to your embassy or consulate.

Cuisine, restaurants

There are plenty of restaurants at every corner, offering delicious food of national traditional food but there are also some international restaurants such as French, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Lebanese, etc. Italian restaurants including pizzerias are also very popular and widespread. The food served in restaurants is in most cases prepared from good quality food and fresh produce, and the portions tend to be large for the average consumer. Usual working hours of the restaurants are from 8 a.m to 11 p.m, but some are open from noon to 1 a.m.

Shopping in markets and food stores

Quick eating in Serbia comes pretty cheap comparing to other European countries thanks to numerous bakeries (Serbian: pekara). There you can find pretty much anything you would bake like breads, muffins, Danish pastries, puff pastries, pies, sandwiches and pizza at a reasonable price.

In most parts of the town you can find fast-food places selling different types of food containing grilled meat like popular pljeskavica (hamburger), cevapcici (meat fingers, similar to hamburger but different shape and size), kobasice (sausages), grilled chicken, etc.

In Belgrade there are numerous local stores as well as large supermarkets. For fruits and vegetables, you may go to green markets (Serbian: pijaca). This is a top place for seasonal fruit and vegetables at relatively low prices.
